2012 has been a year that I have decided to embrace and test the 500 series modules that are becoming more and more popular. Without a doubt, the convenience and portability is great (I was able to carry on my 6 space lunch box on the plane to NYC for the United recording) and I have been enjoying the units I have tried so far. My first purchase was the Helios 500 Type 69

Naturally there are two main ways to approach pre-amps. Sometimes a transparent pre is required for a particular audio source, sometimes a little more colour. Without opening the debate as to which is best, I chose these particular pre/EQ’s specifically to add colour. So far, I haven’t used them in too many applications but when I have, I have enjoyed the tone as it is, and if I have engaged the EQ, have been really happy with the choices the designers have made. The gain stage of the pre takes a little getting used to, as does interpreting some of the British terminology (peak/trough) but all in all I love it! As far as I am aware it is one of the only 500 series unit that has pre and EQ in a single space 500 series unit. Try it..you may enjoy it too..or let me know what its worked on..or not worked on for you!
